Arts & Culture
South Perth Primary School
Artistic and cultural activities at the school are incorporated into the curriculum, provided as additional opportunities or encouraged through linking with other community and state organisations.
Artist in Residence & Art Exhibition
The Artist in Residence Program provides an opportunity for students and teachers to learn specialised skills from a professional artist. Over the years, the school has enjoyed learning from a wide range of visiting artists and students have produced their own ‘masterpieces’ using mediums such as clay, felt, paint and recyclable materials.
This biennial event is funded by the P&C. The artist works with each class and guides each student through a process to create an individual piece of artwork. Students with a talent in art are chosen from each class to take part in the production of collaborative pieces of art for display around the school.
The Artist in Residence Program culminates in the Art Exhibition, an evening where parents socialise and enjoy some light refreshments while viewing all the amazing displays of art produced by the students. Parents can contribute to the P&C by purchasing their child’s art and bidding for the class collaborative pieces.
City of South Perth Competitions
The City of South Perth holds annual ‘Speak With Confidence’ and ‘Young Writers’ competitions for students who attend schools or live in the City of South Perth. South Perth Primary School enters students in both competitions.
The annual Young Writers Competition accepts entries from Year 1 – 12 students, with prizes awarded for various age groups. The children are required to produce an original piece of narrative writing. Our students have achieved great success, with children regularly winning awards.
The Speak with Confidence Award is for students from Year 5 and 6. The students prepare a three minute speech on a topic of their own choice. Heats are held at the school, with two representatives chosen to compete in the semi-finals which are held at the City of South Perth chambers. In 2014, a student from South Perth Primary School achieved second place and in 2015, one of our representatives won the competition.
School Choirs
The school has junior and senior choirs comprised of Years 3/4 and Years 5/6 respectively. Both choirs rehearse before school and participate in a variety of performances including school assemblies and community events. The Senior Choir regularly participates in W.A. Primary Schools’ Massed Choir Festival which is held in Winthrop Hall at the University of Western Australia.
School Band
The School Band is open to students in the School of Instrumental Music (SIM) program and any other students learning a musical instrument. The School Band rehearses before school and performs at school assemblies and community events.
